Thirty-Seven Days Learning Appreciation for Matthew 6.

I had been told many times, “live one day at a time,” by folks much wiser than myself. I had been able to associate this advice with our Savior’s words, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:34) It is one thing to read those words and acknowledge their meaning and another to be put in a position where you virtually have no other choice.

On Feb 21, 2020 we moved into our new home in Athens, Alabama. Three days later, I came down with double pneumonia and was carried by my family to the ER of our nearest hospital. From there I was transported to a larger hospital in the area. During this time, I was out of it. After telling my family that my chance of survival was 50-50, they went to work and put me on life-support. After three days they took me off life-support by removing the tubing. That is when I regained consciousness. For the next 13 days I bounced back and forth between a regular room and ICU. I was conscious all this time enjoying good conversations with the hospital staff. Upon being dismissed from the hospital, I went to a rehab center near our house. After 21 days in rehab I was able to go home. During the rehab stay the pandemic hit and no outsider, in or out of the family, was allowed in the center. So, it was the staff, other patients and me.

During all of this, I believe that I have a better appreciation for living one day at a time, depending of the Lord for my daily needs.

As I grow stronger, with the help of the in-home rehab service, I believe I am truly growing stronger in my relationship with God and His family daily. In writing these few words, it is our hope that it will encourage each of us to improve his or her daily trust in the living God and confidence that by living for Him daily, we will live with him eternally.

  • I’m so glad you are feeling better and getting stronger. I met your son in Williamsburg, VA when he was there visiting Colonial Williamsburg. He worshipped with us at Colonial church of Christ and also attended Bible study. He is a wonderful young man and from your writing I can see the fruit didn’t fall far from the tree. Stay well!
